RF-S Lenses
The RF-S lenses are designed for the EOS R cameras with smaller APS-C sized sensors. These lenses can therefore be made smaller, as they only need to produce a smaller image to cover the smaller sensor. To compare the focal length of RF-S lenses to normal RF full frame lenses, you need to multiply the focal length by 1.6. For example, the RF-S 18-150mm lens is the equivalent of a 29-240mm lens in normal 35mm (full frame) terms - which makes it a very adaptable lens for all round use.
You can use an RF-S lens on a full frame EOS R camera, but the camera will operate in crop mode, capturing a smaller image as not all of the full frame sensor will be covered by the image produced by the lens.
RF Lenses
RF lenses (not RF-S) are designed for EOS R cameras with full frame sensors. As they have to produce an image large enough for the full frame sensor, these lenses are bigger than an RF-S lens - but still quite compact compared to an EF lens (EF lenses are for full frame DSLRS).
Full frame RF lenses can also be used on APS-C sensor EOS R cameras, where you will find the focal length is effectively increased by 1.6 - ie the images are more zoomed in. This is because the smaller sensor only captures the middle part of the image produced by the lens (which is big enough to cover a larger full frame sensor).
EF Lenses with a Mount Adapter
If you have older EF lenses, designed for full frame SLRs, you can also use these on your RF mount EOS R camera if you purchase a Canon EF-EOS R lens mount adapter. Typically all the EF lenses will work well on an RF mount camera using the adapter. There may be some minor limitations - for example, not all of the EF lenses can support shooting at 12fps.
