Comet has announced that it is going to be placed into administration (see BBC news story here). I have therefore removed links to Comet (and Laskys as they are part of the same group) as I would consider it unwise to purchase from them assuming it is even possible to do so.
Following on from the recent demise of the Dixons brand (but not the company which owns it), we are seeing the sudden loss of most of the traditional big electrical retailers. Currys (part of the group that owns the Dixons brand) are pretty much the only one left standing now. Sad really, but I suppose with so many of us buying on line (and using price comparisons to get the best deal!), not to mention the competition from large supermarkets, it must be an increasingly difficult sector to survive in.
I find it interesting that, after a long period of recession or near-recession, very few of the small camera shops that I list have gone bust. I think many photographers still value the knowledgeable and friendly (and often local) service offered by specialist shops, and are prepared to pay a bit more for it.
