Nikon Supply Problems

I’ve been getting a few questions about Nikon prices recently, in particular the lack of any best-ever-prices on their DSLRs.  As some of you are already aware, the Nikon factory in Thailand has been affected by the flooding there, and had to be closed.  As far as I can gather, this factory produces many of their DSLRs.  I think it is reasonable to expect shortages and therefore higher prices for the time being.

If you want to read more about the impact, just search for something like “nikon flooding” in your favourite search engine.  You can read the BJP article about the factory closure here, and details of the resulting impact on Nikon’s business here.

I am in the industry and the supply has less to do with the flooding and more to do with the politics of Nikon supply.
The Selective Dealers lists are so selective it is now impossible to purchase stock at any price let alone at a price which would allow any company to make a profit.
The SD list teamed with the fact that Nikon have recently started to sell through their own website means that there is no longer a fair market for selling Nikon equipment and I am afraid that things will probably just get a hell of a lot worse.
