Canon EOS 1DX

Canon have announced the new EOS 1DX, the replacement for the current EOS 1D series cameras:

Offering an unparalleled combination of speed, resolution and image quality, the EOS-1D X is the ultimate camera for capturing stunning images and Full HD movies. Whether shooting in the studio, the sports field, or anywhere in between, this model is ideal for virtually any professional photographer. The new model launches as the flagship in Canon’s DSLR line up – marking the 10th generation of Canon’s professional system with the most advanced EOS model ever produced.

Headline specs are as follows:

  • 18.1MP full-frame sensor
  • 12fps or 14fps (14 frames per second using a super high speed mode – not sure what this compromises)
  • Dual “DIGIC 5+” processors, giving a 2-stop improvement in noise performance
  • ISO range 100 to an expanded 204800
  • New 61-point wide-area autofocus system
  • Newly-designed RGB metering system

Yes, although it is a sensible looking evolution of the 1D series, they have been slow to expand the range to new formats. It seems as though they won’t get a compact system camera to market this year, and if they delay much longer you get the feeling they might have missed that particular boat. Now a medium format camera from Canon, which has been the subject of some rumour for quite a while, might well be just the innovation the brand needs.

Increasing dynamic range is surely the single most important improvement they could make to their digital SLRs, and I cannot really understand why they have made no progress of any note in this area.

Woo! Excellent. :DI can quite recommend the 35mm f/2, that’s the only lens we acutllay have for the 7D at the moment. Sure it’s a bit old and the auto-focus mechanism isn’t USM so it’s noisy, but I love it. The field of view (56mm equivalent) is just perfect.

A tad perplexed; had really hoped we would see a move towards the medium format cameras, love HD film but as a picture enthusiast would prefer Canon puts its technology and cost in larger sensor and dynamic range.
