It's a whole bunch better than the old 80-400mm and works as you would expect of a new design Nikon zoom, with solidity, fast and quiet autofocus etc.
But I find it lacks the sharpness I hoped for, if you compare with the 200-400 f4 for instance. That's not really surprising since it's way smaller, lighter and 1/3 the price. But a number of pros use them given their lightweight and convenience, so maybe the ultimate sharpness shouldn't be criticised too heavily.

I have on just got this lens, so the review is based on just a few hours use, under less than ideal conditions. The quality of the lens is fantastic and the results so far, have been very pleasing. Although this is an FX lens, Im using the it on a DX D300. The VR is superb; using hand held, as soon as soon as the shutter is slightly depressed the image in the viewfinder is rock steady. The focus is very quick, even when set to full range. I had read some complaints about the tripod collar, but it seems fine to me. I used it with a recently bought Giottos monopod and the whole assembly felt very solid. The lens also comes supplied with a quality case, which will be handy for me, as it wont fit in my current camera bag when not on the camera.

This was a large outlay for me, but so far, I am of the opinion that I have my moneys worth.

I used Camera Price Buster (CPB) to track the lens price, from when it was first released. I did not go for the cheapest option in the end and bought it from Amazon.co.uk. I would have preferred to have bought it from one of the camera shops, but none of the ones I was familiar with had it in stock or the price was significantly more. I did not go for the cheapest option listed on Camera Price Buster, as it was far below the other prices, which to be honest, made me a bit suspicious.

All in all a great lens and thanks to Camera Price Buster for helping me source at a decent price.
