Product: Nikon AF-S DX 12-24mm f4G Lens
Having previously owned a 10-20mm zoom, I found the 12-24mm range of this wide-angle lens to be ideal with the DX format. 12mm is wide enough to give good coverage without distortion, and the extra 4mm at the long end means that the lens stays on your camera for longer.
The sharpness and contrast of the optics is of the usual mid-range Nikon quality, i.e. very good indeed. The zoom and focus rings are light and smooth and offer good control. I mainly use this lens for landscape, cityscapes and whacky perspective effects, and its handles these competantly.
On the downside, the fact that this was the first DX offering shows. This is the only Nikon lens I own which suffers from purple fringing, which is quite noticeable in high-contrast situations. Id like to see how the 10-24mm compares, although its variable maximum aperture is a put-off. Overall, I believe most people prefer the performance of the older 12-24mm sibling.
