Great little camera at a terrific price. The lens supplied with the kit is perfect.
I also bought the new Nikon AF-S 35mm f1.8 to add more interest.
Quality-wise the D40 competes well with my D300 and D200 which are a bit on the heavy side for walking. The 6meg sensor is also a lot quicker to handle on the computer.

Having had the opportunity to own/test the Nikon D70, D80 & D40X, I can honestly say the D40 is my favourite and in my subjective opinion produces the best picture quality straight out of the camera.
Forget about mega pixel envy, unless you are going to print 2 foot wide banners or need to massively crop then 6 MP is more than enough. I view my shots full screen on a 22" monitor and they look truly excellent. At 200 ISO the D40 is easily a match for the D40X/D80 at ISO 100 and the higher ISO helps avoid the camera shake Ive often experienced when zooming at long focal lengths.
Build quality is excellent for this price range as is the kit lens that comes with the camera. It produces sharp, contrasty results and is quick and accurate to focus. I find the camera very tactile; the grip is good and its light enough to hang round you neck all day.
If you want the best picture quality per pound then this is the package to buy. Having tried the D40X I honestly think its never worth the extra money. Take my advice and put the £150 towards a new Nikkor 55-200mm VR.
My verdict: The best picture quality with the minimum of effort; truly a Nikon classic in the making and great value for money.
