Purchased this yesterday to replace the 55 - 300mm Dx D EG for the D5300. We are able to compare this lens with the professional lenses as it can also be used on our FX camera D800. We chose this as it is of better construction over the 55 - 300mm DX. That being said there is noticeable difference with this lens as it is not as sharp as the 70 - 200 VR II but why would it be for half the price. The image can be fine tuned in photoshop to give a reasonable result. It gives us 450mm on a D5300 and is lighter that the 70 - 200 VR. I would not use it for a professional shoot though but useful in the street, the sharpness is not there at 300 but otherwise it is a solid lens and fits it's purpose. Nice solid feel with quiet and quick focus, all good.

As good as it gets for this sort of money. Quality of photos I have taken with it range from OK to excellent. Best stopped down a little, unfortunately with a max aperture of f5.6 at the long end, stopping down much isn’t always an option. Good build quality.

This a great value telephoto zoom capapble of producing stunning photos, as long as you are prepared to accept a few minor flaws. Lets get the negatives out of the way first: its not a great sports/nature lens, and its not very sharp at 300mm; if you want these qualities youre going to have to spend a hell of a lot more, and your back will know about it, as well as your wallet.
Regardless, this is a great walkaround telephoto zoom, which produces very sharp long landscape and nature shots in a relatively lightweight package. Long-end shots are perfectly usable, as long as you employ good technique and appropriate AF settings, although I find nature photography a bit hit-and-miss at its 300mm end.
Bokeh is very good, and VR is excellent, which is just what you need in a telephoto. It looks a bit cheap fully extended, but it handles very well, and you can carry it around all day without noticing.
All in all, this is an ideal economical walkaround telephoto zoom. Its better built and higher quality than the cheaper Nikon telephotos. But if you want something more specialised, youll have to pay big money, and hire a caddy.
